Bohemian Cloud-Blue Opaline Glass Decanter with Knight Portrait, 19th Century

Bohemian decanter dating from the second half of the 19th century, made of softly translucent cloud-blue opaline glass and richly decorated with enamel and gilding.

The front features a finely painted portrait of a helmeted knight set within an elaborate gilt ornamental frame. The portrait has an unusually individual and expressive character, while the contrast between the pale blue body and the black opaque glass stopper gives the piece a particularly striking and sophisticated appearance.

The decanter belongs stylistically to the Historicist / Revival tradition of Bohemian decorative glass. A probable dating is circa 1860–1890.

The exact maker is unknown. No specific workshop attribution is made.

The base bears the number 35, most likely a production, pattern or decorator’s number.

Condition

Good antique condition consistent with age. There is visible wear to the gilding and painted decoration, especially within the portrait and ornamental areas, together with minor general surface wear.
