Early Carved Galalith Necklace in Coral Color, Bohemia, ca. 1915–1930

An elegant early Bohemian necklace composed of finely carved beads, most likely made from Galalith (casein plastic), one of the earliest synthetic materials used in high-quality European jewelry during the first decades of the twentieth century.

Produced circa 1915–1930, the necklace beautifully illustrates the period when innovative plastics were appreciated not as inexpensive substitutes, but as modern artistic materials capable of being carved, polished and shaped with remarkable precision.

The warm coral-colored palette was almost certainly inspired by natural Mediterranean coral, a highly fashionable material of the period. Rather than attempting an exact imitation, the maker created a sophisticated composition of carved and smooth beads that celebrates the decorative possibilities of early plastics.

The necklace displays an attractive rhythm of alternating forms, including delicately carved spherical beads, elegant spindle-shaped elements, bell-shaped separators and a beautifully carved central bead. The original fine wire stringing and early flat spring-ring clasp further support its early twentieth-century origin.

Although the exact workshop remains unidentified, both the design and craftsmanship strongly suggest production in Bohemia, most likely within the rich jewelry-making tradition of the Jablonec region, renowned for its innovative costume jewelry during the early twentieth century.
